Cornwall Air Ambulance has announced the appointment of a new Chair of the Board, David Richards CBE. With a distinguished career in motorsports and a wealth of experience in leadership, David is set to steer the local charity into a promising future.

A Proven Leader in Motorsports

David Richards brings an impressive background, having founded Prodrive and led teams in Formula One. He also previously chaired Aston Martin and continues to hold the role of Chairman at both Prodrive and Motorsport UK. His career spans 50 years in the motor industry, and he has achieved notable successes, including winning the World Rally Championships both as an individual and with his team.

Beyond motorsports, David has held significant roles in the charity sector, particularly in healthcare and road safety organisations. His ability to build world-class teams and lead large organisations will be a valuable asset to Cornwall Air Ambulance.

A Strong Connection to Cornwall

With a base on the Roseland Peninsula, David is deeply connected to Cornwall, owning both the Idle Rocks and St Mawes Hotel. His ties to the local community make this appointment particularly significant as Cornwall Air Ambulance continues to provide crucial services to the county and the Isles of Scilly.

David expressed his enthusiasm about joining the charity at such an exciting time, stating: “I am delighted to be joining Cornwall Air Ambulance, and at such an exciting time for the charity as it grows its service provision with the purchase of a second helicopter.”

Tim Bunting, Chief Executive of Cornwall Air Ambulance, also shared his excitement about working with David, noting the extensive experience he brings from leading high-profile organisations.

Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Mission

Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust funds the helicopter emergency medical service that serves Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. With over 1,000 missions attended each year, the aircrew operates 19 hours a day, 365 days a year, using an AW169 helicopter and two rapid response vehicles. The helicopter typically reaches mainland Cornwall in just 12 minutes and the Isles of Scilly in less than 30 minutes.

Operating without direct government funding, the charity relies on donations from the public and businesses. It costs over £7 million annually to keep the service running, and with the addition of a second helicopter, the charity is entering a new phase of growth.
