Cornwall Air Ambulance Vice-President Awarded MBE in New Year Honours
Recognising Years of Dedication to Charity
Barbara Sharples, Vice-President of Cornwall Air Ambulance, has been honoured with an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2025 New Year’s Honours list. The award celebrates her exceptional contributions to the charity sector, including her transformative work with Cornwall Air Ambulance.
Barbara began her journey with the charity as a trustee in 2017. She later took on the role of Chair of the New Heli Appeal board, spearheading efforts that raised an impressive £2.9 million towards the purchase of the charity’s first AW169 helicopter. Her influence extended beyond Cornwall as she founded the charity’s London Committee, engaging supporters with ties to the region.
Launching Innovative Programmes
Barbara’s leadership also saw the creation of Cornwall Air Ambulance’s ambassador programme. Through this, she introduced celebrity ambassadors, including Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, who have passionately supported the charity’s cause.
In her current role as Vice-President, Barbara continues to make a significant impact. She is also the founder and Chair of the Philanthropy Forum, a group of high-profile fundraisers who collectively generate approximately £400,000 annually for Cornwall Air Ambulance.
Celebrating the Honour
Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Chief Executive, Tim Bunting, praised Barbara’s achievements:
“We are absolutely delighted that Barbara has been awarded an MBE. She has worked tirelessly not only for Cornwall Air Ambulance but also for many other businesses and charities at a senior level over many years. Everyone who knows Barbara will be aware of her outstanding commitment and dedication to Cornwall Air Ambulance.”
Tim highlighted Barbara’s crucial role in the charity’s success:
“Without Barbara’s incredible dedication, we would never be in the position that we are today of being within touching distance of owning not only one, but two AW169 helicopters.”
Barbara’s Response
Reflecting on her MBE, Barbara expressed her gratitude:
“The greatest honour is to serve a charity you are passionate about, and able in some small way to make a difference. To serve a lifesaving charity, where every minute can make the difference, is incredibly rewarding. I am delighted that receiving an MBE has shone a light on the charities I love and the work they do, the amazing teams, crew and volunteers.”
She added:
“I appreciate and have been so overwhelmed by the kind response of so many people who have taken the time to congratulate me on my MBE either personally or on social media. I am extremely grateful for all the warm response that I have received.”
A Legacy of Leadership
Barbara’s impact isn’t limited to Cornwall Air Ambulance. She has an impressive career as an international executive, having worked at board level to launch new businesses and drive change in established organisations. Her previous roles include serving as a managing director with The Body Shop PLC and working with Dorling Kindersley Publishing.
Barbara has also made significant contributions to other charities, including Children on the Edge, showcasing her lifelong commitment to making a difference.
