Cornwall Air Ambulance has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2024 Air Ambulances UK ‘Awards of Excellence’. The annual ceremony, which celebrates the lifesaving work of air ambulance charities across the country, will take place in Coventry on 28th November. The charity’s nominations include Trustee of the Year for Robert Cowie and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Mick McLachlan.

Celebrating Commitment: Trustee of the Year Nominee, Robert Cowie

Robert Cowie, a trustee with over 40 years’ experience as a Chartered Accountant, has been recognised for his dedication to Cornwall Air Ambulance. Joining the charity almost a decade ago, Robert has played a crucial role in guiding the organisation through significant decisions, including the purchase of a first and now a second AW169 helicopter.

His financial expertise and strategic oversight have been invaluable, particularly during challenging periods such as the aftermath of the global pandemic and a switch in air operation providers. Robert has also been instrumental in a governance review and has committed countless hours to the charity, whether at Board meetings, events, or supporting volunteers and staff.

A Lifesaving Legacy: Mick McLachlan Shortlisted for Lifetime Achievement Award

Mick McLachlan’s career with Cornwall Air Ambulance spans nearly two decades, making him the longest-serving full-time Critical Care Paramedic in the charity’s history. Mick joined the ambulance service in 1991 and became one of the first full-time paramedics with Cornwall Air Ambulance in 2006.

His pioneering work includes advancing into a Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care role and advocating for a 19-hour a day service. Mick has also played a pivotal role in developing in-depth data reporting, advising on operational recommendations, and was part of the team that delivered the first Pre-Hospital Emergency Anaesthesia on scene. With over 4,600 missions attended, including more than 4,200 by air, Mick’s contributions have been significant to both the charity and the wider community.

Recognition from Air Ambulances UK

Simmy Akhtar, CEO of Air Ambulances UK, praised the nominees, stating, “The calibre of talent across the air ambulance sector is truly inspiring.” The winners of the 2024 Awards of Excellence will be announced at the annual Conference and Awards of Excellence, celebrating the outstanding efforts of individuals and teams within the sector.

Cornwall Air Ambulance continues to make a significant impact in the community, with dedicated individuals like Robert Cowie and Mick McLachlan at the forefront of their lifesaving efforts.
