Speak Cornish Week 2024: A Warm Cornish Welcome Awaits
Speak Cornish Week is back, running from Saturday 22nd June to Sunday 30th June, and it’s set to be a fantastic celebration of the Cornish language.
Organised by An Rosweyth, a collective of Cornish language community organisations, this annual event aims to immerse people in the Cornish language and culture. This year’s theme, “A Warm Cornish Welcome,” encourages everyone to use Cornish greetings in their daily interactions.
Growing Interest in Cornish
With a rising interest in Cornish culture and heritage, the Cornish language has seen a significant increase in learners, not only across the UK but internationally. Past themes have included “Prag na/why not….”, “My a gar/I love…..”, and encouraging the use of five Cornish words a day.
A Community Effort
As a minority language in the UK, the promotion of Cornish relies heavily on passionate volunteers. These dedicated individuals publish textbooks, dictionaries, novels, and children’s books. They also run an exam system, organise events, lessons, and Yeth an Werins—informal meet-ups to practise speaking Cornish. Their efforts are vital in keeping the language alive and thriving in the community.
Exciting Events Planned
This year’s Speak Cornish Week promises a variety of engaging events. There will be taster sessions for absolute beginners, available both in person and online. Participants can also look forward to a litter pick, scenic walks, a Treasure Trail at Heartlands, a boat trip featuring Shanty singing, and much more.
For those interested in learning some basic Cornish phrases, here are a few to get started:
- Dydh da – hello
- Lowena dhis – Joy to you
- Yew sos – Hi mate
