Why Were Two Birthday Cakes Needed at This Redruth and Truro Gathering?
Curious locals treated to laughter, cake, and community at Oddfellows events this May
Members of the Oddfellows Friendship Groups in Redruth and Truro enjoyed a cheerful and packed celebration this May, bringing together community, support, and a good dose of birthday fun.
Beetle Drive and Birthday Bash
The events featured a lively beetle drive, filled with laughter and friendly competition, complemented by a tempting spread of refreshments. Alongside teas, coffees, and traditional Cornish hevva cake, members indulged in chocolate biscuits, fresh fruit, sweets, and two birthday cakes—each topped with sparklers.
The occasion was extra special for member Victoria, who marked her 80th birthday in style. The double cake celebration made sure everyone got a taste of the cheer.
Behind the Scenes Support
A warm thank you was given to Alison, recognised for her dedication in organising items for the annual shoebox appeal, which is coordinated by Sandra.
As well as the festivities, members were updated on the support available to them, including grants for dental and optical care, access to a members’ advice line and legal support.
More to Look Forward To
Looking ahead, the group shared updates on upcoming activities, including free chair yoga sessions and a group visit to a historic landmark, followed by a communal lunch.
The day also featured a raffle, with proceeds supporting local charities, the free book club, and take-away puzzle sheets for members to enjoy at home.
In June, Oddfellows members can look forward to a talk from local councillor Ruth Major about her “Beautify Britain” campaign. The month’s activities will also include a wartime-themed quiz in recognition of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
