Why Amos the Donkey Caught the Eye of the Oddfellows Friendship Group
A local Oddfellows Friendship Group has found a unique way to give back by adopting Amos, a donkey rescued by the Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary near Penryn. The decision was made during a recent gathering of the group, which meets regularly in Redruth.
Amos’ Journey to Safety
Amos’ story captured the hearts of the group after a visit to the Flicka Foundation. Rescued from a live animal market in 2019, Amos was in a poor condition when the sanctuary stepped in to save him. The group members were deeply moved by the sanctuary’s efforts to rescue animals from cruelty and decided to use funds raised through their prize raffles to adopt him.
Within minutes of the decision, an online payment was made, securing Amos’ care and ongoing support.
A Social Afternoon with a Cause
The gathering didn’t stop at adopting Amos. Members enjoyed a lively game of card bingo, a members’ benefits update from one of the Oddfellows District welfare representatives, and a prize raffle. The event also featured teas, coffees, biscuits, fruit, and sweets, alongside take-home puzzle sheets and free books.
Oddfellows’ Commitment to Charity
The adoption of Amos is just the latest in a series of charitable acts by the Oddfellows. Recent contributions include support for a local homeless charity, assistance to a canine charity, gifts to a hospice, and entertainment at a hospital.
Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows, part of one of the UK’s oldest friendly societies, welcomes members of all ages and genders. The group offers social events, care and welfare support, a travel club, and volunteering opportunities.
