Sports Facilities Hit by Storms? Apply for Sport England’s Emergency Funding
Community sports facilities and pitches across Cornwall and the rest of England affected by recent extreme weather, including Storms Bert, Conall, and Darragh, can now apply for emergency funding through Sport England’s Movement Fund. The fund offers small grants of £300 to £15,000 to help organisations recover from storm damage and get people active again.
The fund aims to provide swift support for repairs and restoration, enabling communities to return to sports and physical activities. According to Tim Hollingsworth, Sport England’s chief executive, the damage caused by severe weather extends beyond physical infrastructure.
“Storms and major weather events don’t just damage our facilities and pitches; they damage our opportunities for good health, community connection, fun and friendship too,” said Tim.
“That’s why the Movement Fund is available to organisations that are struggling in the aftermath, to restore opportunities to play sport and get active in the worst-hit areas.”
Who Can Apply for the Funding?
Community organisations that meet Sport England’s Movement Fund eligibility criteria can apply for assistance. Applicants will need to provide evidence of storm-related damage, such as photographs or official reports, and confirm they have the necessary permissions for the proposed work.
Applications are encouraged from organisations committed to reducing energy usage, promoting sustainable travel, and building resilience to future weather events as part of wider net zero goals.
What Can the Funding Be Used For?
Sport England has outlined specific types of costs that can be covered by the fund, including:
- Skip hire for clearing sediment and waste
- Minor electrical works to restore power
- Decontamination or clearing blocked drains
- Cleaning to restore showers and changing rooms
- Securing buildings
What Won’t Be Funded?
The fund is designed to support emergency relief efforts, not long-term repairs or loss recovery. Sport England will not cover:
- Routine maintenance or repairs unrelated to storm damage
- Loss of income or stock
- Work covered by existing insurance policies
- Repairs to facilities primarily used for competitive league football, unless they are multi-activity venues
How to Apply
Organisations interested in applying can find full details and submit applications via Sport England’s website: Funding available for facilities damaged by extreme weather.
This funding presents a vital opportunity for communities to restore their sports facilities and help people get active again after the disruptive effects of extreme weather.
