Seasonal Cheer Lights Up West Cornwall Hospital: Oddfellows Spread Festive Joy

Bringing Goodwill to Hospital Patients

Members of the Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows Friendly Society brought festive cheer to patients and staff at West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance with a series of seasonal events. The activities, organised in collaboration with hospital social organiser Erna Stones, were designed to uplift spirits and bring a sense of community during the Christmas season.

The first event featured an illustrated talk with a historical theme, while the second saw an afternoon of carols and popular Christmas songs, accompanied by live music. Both events were enjoyed not only by patients but also by carers, nurses, physiotherapists, and doctors, who joined in the celebrations.

A Rewarding Experience

Ian Gowing, organist for Plymouth and Truro Oddfellows and a local church musician, shared his thoughts on the experience:
“Our motto in Oddfellows is friendship, love and truth and together we have certainly demonstrated this down the year. Our members have collected gifts for children in need, donated essential supplies to a charity dealing with the most needy in Plymouth, assisted a local animal charity in Cornwall, as well as participating in fundraising organised nationally by the Oddfellows which financed research into cancer.”

Reflecting on the hospital event, Ian added: “One of the most moving things for me was when one of the longer-term patients told me that the singalong in hospital made this Christmas the best she could remember. I found that a generous reward for our efforts if any were needed. That simple remark meant so very much to us all.”

Gratitude on Both Sides

Hospital staff expressed their gratitude to the Oddfellows for their efforts, acknowledging the positive impact of their visit on patients and the wider hospital community. In turn, Oddfellows members extended their thanks to medical and emergency staff for their tireless service during the festive period and throughout the year.
