Only Three BBQ Smoke Complaints Made in Cornwall Since 2022

New data reveals how few formal complaints have been made about smoky summer grilling

Newly released FOI data shows that Cornwall has received just three formal complaints about BBQ smoke in private gardens over the past three years.

The figures, obtained by outdoor living experts Vonhaus, suggest that people in the South West might be unusually tolerant when it comes to their neighbours firing up the grill.

The Numbers

Between 2022 and 2024, Cornwall Council recorded the following:

• 2022: 2 complaints

• 2023: 1 complaint

• 2024 to date: 0 complaints

No warnings, fines or enforcement notices have been issued in relation to BBQ smoke in that time.

Grilling Without Grumbling?

Rebecca Smith, buyer at Vonhaus, said:
“From flame-grilled feasts to pizza oven parties, we know Brits love cooking outside – but it’s interesting to see how rare formal complaints are.

For most people, a smoky BBQ is part of summer. That said, a bit of consideration goes a long way – and choosing a good quality BBQ or pizza oven with better smoke control can make a big difference.”

The data suggests that either Cornish residents don’t mind the smell of grilled sausages drifting over the garden fence – or they’re just too polite to complain.
