Oddfellows Enjoy Talk from ‘Rubbish Ruth’ and Wartime Quiz

Oddfellows enjoy litter-picking tales and wartime nostalgia

Members of the Oddfellows Friendship Groups in Redruth and Truro recently gathered for a lively social event featuring cakes, tea, and a bit of wartime brainpower — all wrapped around a special talk by one of their own.

From Litter to Legacy

Ruth Major, a fellow member and local councillor, is better known in the media as ‘Rubbish Ruth’. Ruth moved to Cornwall and began her personal litter-picking journey back in 2017. Her campaign, later named Beautify Britain, was sparked by growing public interest.

Armed with her free bus pass, Ruth travels across the country, picking up at least one piece of litter every day. She shares her efforts regularly on Facebook and Threads, encouraging others to help keep Britain clean and beautiful.

Wartime Quiz and Sweet Treats

To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Oddfellows also hosted a wartime-themed quiz during the event. The quiz proved a hit with attendees, sparking memories for some who remembered the immediate post-war years.

The day had all the usual touches the Oddfellows are known for — a welcoming atmosphere, plenty of cake and chocolate biscuits, hot drinks on tap, and the ever-popular take-home puzzles and book club materials. A prize raffle rounded off the event, raising funds for a local good cause that’s still to be confirmed.

More Than Just Tea and Cake

The Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows is part of one of the UK’s oldest friendship societies, with a long tradition of bringing people together through community and support.

Open to all ages and backgrounds, members can enjoy regular events across Redruth, Truro, Plymouth, and nearby areas. There’s access to welfare and care support, volunteering opportunities, a travel club, and a chance to build lasting friendships.
