Millionaire Over Lunch? Cornwall Man’s Quick Bite Turns Into £1M Lottery Win

Published On: 13 March 2025Last Updated: 13 March 2025By

A quick lunch break turned into a life-changing moment for Craig Haggie, a 36-year-old from Liskeard, who has become The National Lottery’s newest millionaire. Craig picked up a £1M-winning Scratchcard on a whim while grabbing a drink for his brother, completely unaware that his trip to the local shop would change his family’s future.

A Lunch Break Like No Other

Craig, the Managing Director of WCL Storage Systems, had ordered a burger and had some time to kill, so he visited the Spar on Fore Street in Callington, where he bought two National Lottery Cash Vault Scratchcards. One of them turned out to be worth £1M.

“I went out for lunch and came back a millionaire,” Craig said, still trying to grasp the reality of his unexpected fortune. The father of four discovered his win in the middle of his family’s work office, sparking chaos as relatives jumped around in excitement.

Keeping the Ticket Safe – Or Trying To!

With the shock of the win sinking in, Craig’s first thought was to secure the Scratchcard.

“It was absolute pandemonium, my family were jumping around the office screaming while my first thought was where’s the safest place to keep the Scratchcard!” he said.

Craig and his brother, Nick, decided to take no chances. “We put the ticket in a plastic bag and taped it to my body! We must have looked crazy mad as he held the roll of tape, and I twirled around to make sure it was stuck securely to my body.”

However, this plan was short-lived. “It didn’t last long as I quickly got very sweaty, and it wasn’t staying stuck to me, so we settled on keeping it in a saucepan on the top of a kitchen cabinet instead. You clearly don’t think straight when you find out you’re a millionaire!”

Zoe’s Shock: “Is This Real?”

Craig’s wife, Zoe, was at work when he called to tell her the news, but she wasn’t convinced.

“Craig is always winding me up, so I just didn’t believe him! I was at work cleaning a client’s house, and I had to finish before I could leave and meet Craig. I remember thinking, ‘Is this real? Has our life really just changed forever?’ I finished the house in record time – never has a carpet been hoovered so quickly!”

Arriving at Craig’s work, Zoe quickly realised the win was real.

“I sat on the floor and cried. It was just the relief that we could finally sort our home out and get a bedroom for all the kids. We love where we live – it’s a beautiful spot and the neighbours are brilliant, but the bungalow isn’t big enough for the six of us.”

Building Their Dream Home

Craig and Zoe, who have been married for six years, live in a two-bedroom bungalow with their four children, aged 5 to 11. They purchased the property at auction nine years ago and even featured on Homes Under the Hammer, hoping to renovate. While they had been saving hard, the dream of a bigger home still felt out of reach—until now.

Zoe already has plans in motion. “This win has just been incredible for our family, and we can’t wait to start work on our new home. I have sketchbooks full of floor plans already – it’s my favourite hobby! We’re both still young and enjoy our jobs, so we will continue working, however, I may reduce my cleaning hours and even get a cleaner of my own in time – imagine that!”

A Winning Ticket for More Than Just Craig

Craig bought his winning Scratchcard for £5, with a 1 in 3.39 overall chance of winning a prize. National Lottery players contribute to wider causes, generating around £30M each week for National Lottery-funded projects across the UK, from community groups to preserving historical landmarks.

Craig’s win has not only transformed his family’s life but is also a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a lunch break to change everything.
