Cornish Oddfellows Join National Gathering in Scarborough
Members of the Oddfellows Friendly Society from across Cornwall recently travelled to Scarborough to take part in the Society’s annual conference, joining delegates from the Plymouth and Truro District and across the UK.
The three-day event brought together hundreds of members and was chaired by National Grand Master Barbara Needham, supported by Chief Executive and Secretary Jane Nelson and a 14-member Board of Executive and Non-Executive Directors. Voting deputies from across the country, including a strong Cornish presence, gathered for a full and productive agenda.

International guests and local welcome
The conference welcomed senior representatives from the American Oddfellows, including Sovereign Grand Master Gerry Workman from West Virginia, who received a warm reception from UK members.
Proceedings were officially opened by the Mayor of Scarborough, Councillor Thomas Murray, who praised the Society’s contribution to member welfare and charitable causes. He also noted the positive economic impact of welcoming hundreds of delegates to the town.

Focus on welfare, finances and community
The conference covered detailed reports on the Society’s financial health, including management of its significant investment and property portfolio, valued in the hundreds of millions.
There were also updates on the fraternal side of the organisation, which provides social support and services to members, especially during times of need.
The venue hosted a range of welfare and financial advice stalls, along with society merchandise and fundraising activities. Significant funds were raised for medical research and other charities, reinforcing the Oddfellows’ commitment to community support.

Music, services and social events
Members enjoyed a celebratory concert by the award-winning Oddfellows Brass Band and a church service led by the Society’s Anglican minister, Reverend Bruce Nicole. Social events, excursions and dinners offered members the chance to connect and enjoy the occasion.
Reflecting on the week, Peter English, Secretary of the Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows based in Redruth, said:
“This has been a superbly organised conference, bringing together members from across the UK and overseas. It’s always a joy to reconnect with fellow Oddfellows, share experiences, and see the incredible work being done across the Society. I’ve been a proud member for over 50 years and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. We really do look after our members.”
