Farm to Fork Learning Adventure for Year 3 Students

Year 3 pupils from Launceston Primary School, part of the Athena Learning Trust, had a day to remember this term as they explored the world of agriculture at the Royal Cornwall Showground during the Farm & Country Days event.

The visit gave the children a unique, hands-on opportunity to discover where their food comes from. With over 120 volunteers on hand, the event ran smoothly and offered plenty of chances for pupils, teachers, and visitors to get stuck in.

Interactive Learning in the Outdoors

The children enjoyed everything from meeting farm animals to taking part in hands-on exhibits. The immersive experience aimed to give pupils a better understanding of how food travels from the field to their plate—all while making the most of the Cornish outdoors.

The Farm & Country Days is an annual educational event, specifically designed for Cornish primary schools. Over two days, it welcomes around 1,500 children and showcases more than 50 exhibits covering all aspects of local farming and food production. Since its launch in 2013, more than 10,000 pupils have taken part, supported by more than 200 dedicated volunteers.

Celebrating Outdoor Learning at Launceston Primary

Launceston Primary School places a strong emphasis on outdoor learning, exploration, and creative problem-solving through what it calls ‘tinkering’—a style of purposeful play. This aligns with the school’s values of adventure, exploration, and promoting pupil wellbeing.

Kate Eyre, Principal at Launceston Primary School, said:

“We couldn’t have asked for a better day! The Royal Cornwall Showground provided an incredible setting for our pupils to learn about farming in such an engaging way. It was wonderful to see them so excited and involved.

We are incredibly proud of Mr. Marshall, who organised this trip as a newly qualified teacher. He truly went above and beyond, and we also want to thank Mrs. Dean for her support as a new member of our team. It’s experiences like this that really enrich our pupils’ education.”

Recognised for Quality Education

Launceston Primary School is rated Good by Ofsted across all areas, including the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision.

Inspectors noted the school’s strong sense of community and the determination of staff to help all pupils succeed in a supportive and engaging learning environment.
