A Day of Reading and Imagination

Students and staff at Pool Academy embraced creativity and fun on Thursday, 6th March, as they marked World Book Day with a range of activities designed to inspire a love of reading. The school, part of Athena Learning Trust, encouraged pupils to explore books in a way that suited them, following this year’s theme, “Read Your Way.”

Guess Who’s Reading?

One of the highlights of the day was the ‘Guess Who’s Reading’ competition, where 20 teachers concealed their identities behind their favourite books. Students had to put their detective skills to the test, submitting their guesses for a chance to win prizes.

Reading in the Most Unusual Places

Pupils also took part in the ‘Extreme Reading’ challenge, finding imaginative ways to read in unique locations. Whether balancing on a skateboard, hanging upside down, or reading in the middle of a football pitch, students came up with inventive ways to show their passion for books.

Cooking Up Book Characters

For those who prefer to get hands-on, ‘Cook a Character’ allowed students to bring their favourite book characters to life – through food! From potato-based figures to elaborately decorated cakes, students got creative in the kitchen to celebrate the day.

Readathon Thursday

Staff also encouraged pupils to keep reading throughout the day, taking part in ‘Readathon Thursday’, where teachers read for a 30-minute slot in the school reception area, reinforcing the importance of daily reading.

A Message from the Principal

Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, praised the enthusiasm shown by students:

“World Book Day was a fantastic opportunity to remind our students that reading isn’t just about schoolwork – it’s about adventure, imagination, and fun. The enthusiasm from students for the activities we put on was inspiring, and I hope they will continue exploring the joy of reading in their own way.”

Promoting Reading for Pleasure

World Book Day is a charity that works to ensure every child has access to books and promotes reading for pleasure. Pool Academy’s celebrations aimed to show that reading isn’t a chore but an enjoyable, social, and rewarding experience.

Pool Academy’s core values – aspiration, belonging, and respect – are central to its approach. Ofsted inspectors have highlighted that students feel safe at the school and benefit from strong pastoral support. The morning greeting helps pupils start the day positively, while quiet and calm classrooms support learning.

With events like these, Pool Academy is making sure that books remain a source of excitement and discovery for its students.
