Truro and Penwith College Hosts Drag Star Vicki Vivacious for an Enlightening Session on Drag Language
At Truro and Penwith College, students of the A Level English Language course had the unique opportunity to delve into the vibrant world of drag language, guided by none other than Aaron, popularly known as Vicki Vivacious, the Cabaret Queen of Cornwall and a celebrated contestant from RuPaul’s Drag Race.
The college welcomed Vicki with open arms, providing a platform for an in-depth discussion on the nuances of drag language and its cultural implications. Aaron, through his alter ego Vicki Vivacious, offered invaluable insights into various linguistic topics, highlighting the significant influence of US English on British drag language. He emphasised how drag language not only reflects but also celebrates regional identity, among other aspects.
This interactive session opened up a lively dialogue, with students eagerly posing questions to Aaron. The insights gained from this exchange were not only educational but also eye-opening, equipping the students with a broader understanding of language use in contemporary and cultural contexts. This knowledge is something they are poised to apply in their forthcoming A level examinations.
Vicki, proud of her Cornish roots, made history as the first drag queen from Cornwall to participate in Drag Race. Embracing her identity, Vicki shared, “My drag is a celebration of powerful women.” This message resonated with the students, providing them with a vivid example of how language and performance can intertwine to express identity and empowerment.
The session at Truro and Penwith College stands as a testament to the educational value of exploring diverse cultural expressions. Through the words and experiences of Vicki Vivacious, students were given a rare glimpse into the world of drag, enriching their academic journey with lessons of inclusivity, diversity, and the power of language.
