In an impressive display of talent and creativity, Truro and Penwith College’s Hair and Beauty students showcased their exceptional skills at the much-anticipated Cornish Skills Competition 2024.

The event, a highlight in the College’s calendar, provided a platform for students from across the Hair and Beauty subject area to demonstrate the expertise they have honed, aligning with this year’s theme of ‘Inspiration and Aspiration’.

A Showcase of Skill and Creativity

The competition saw a flurry of innovative ideas brought to life, as students transformed models, demonstrating their ability to meet and exceed the demands of the theme. Their efforts were evaluated by a panel of industry experts, including representatives from Shannon’s Hair Design, VTCT, and Barber Fresh, who faced the challenging task of identifying winners among the many talented participants.

Recognition and Opportunity

The event not only served as a celebration of the students’ skills but also as a stepping stone for further achievements. Top students earned the chance to represent the College at WorldSkills UK, with prospects of advancing to the international stage at the World Skills competition, an event renowned for highlighting global excellence in various skills.

Industry Expertise and Feedback

Mark, Barbering Business Development Manager at VTCT, praised the competition for its role in showcasing student skills and its significant impact on their confidence. “The competition shows the skills the students have got, and it will give them confidence for the rest of their lives,” he remarked, underscoring the lasting benefits of such an experience.

Discovering Passions and Pathways

Among the noteworthy achievements, Poppy, the winner of the Level 2 Hairdressing category, shared her journey of discovery and passion. Initially inclined towards beauty, the freedom and experiences offered by the course led her to a newfound love for hairdressing. “I always thought I wanted to focus more so on Beauty, but due to the freedom on the course, I’ve discovered I love doing Hair,” Poppy reflected, highlighting the personal and professional growth fostered by the College’s programme.

Looking Forward

The Cornish Skills Competition 2024 not only celebrated the present achievements of Truro and Penwith College’s students but also set the stage for their future successes.
