Thousands of iPads Rolled Out to Cornwall’s Schools – Will It Bridge the Digital Divide?
A major investment in digital education is taking place across Cornwall, as over 6,000 iPads have been distributed to schools under Truro & Penwith Academy Trust (TPAT), thanks to a partnership with Manchester-based tech specialist, Sync.
Supporting Disadvantaged Students
TPAT, which oversees 34 schools across Cornwall, is aiming to tackle the challenges posed by socio-economic deprivation, rural poverty, and geographic isolation. Research from the University of Exeter has highlighted that students in the South West have some of the lowest educational outcomes in the country.
To combat this, TPAT’s Advantage Programme has introduced a 1:1 device model, ensuring that every student has access to digital tools both at school and at home. The iPad rollout is a key part of this effort.
Dr Jennifer Blunden (MBE), CEO of TPAT, explained the significance of the investment:
“At a time when school funding is stretched, investing in technology requires a leap of faith, but one that’s already proving invaluable. Thanks to Sync, our students and teachers have access to vital digital tools that are enhancing learning and engagement across our schools.”
Transforming Classrooms
Schools are already reporting positive changes, with teachers able to improve lesson delivery, assessments, and feedback. Students are more engaged and motivated as learning becomes more interactive.
Daniel Simons, Headteacher at Bodriggy Academy, praised the impact on his school:
“Sync really listened to our needs. Our school serves families in some of the most deprived areas in Cornwall, and this iPad rollout has been transformative for our students.”
At Hayle Academy, the sentiment is similar. Rebecca Leech, Assistant Headteacher, said:
“This isn’t just about technology – it’s about fairness. Every child deserves equal access to the tools that help them learn, and iPads have made lessons more interactive and accessible.”
A Step Towards Digital Equality
Marcus Durkan, Head of Education at Sync, emphasised the company’s commitment to ensuring all students have access to modern learning resources:
“We feel privileged to help children in rural, disadvantaged areas gain access to the digital tools they need to succeed. Technology should never be a barrier to learning, and we’re excited to continue expanding our reach as iPads become a staple in modern classrooms.”
With thousands of devices now in the hands of Cornwall’s students, TPAT is leading the way in digital education. The big question remains: will this investment be enough to close the achievement gap and level the playing field for young learners in the region?
