Third Day of Strikes at St Francis C of E Primary School Draws Growing Support
The third day of strike action at St Francis C of E Primary School in Falmouth took place today, Wednesday 9th July, with a strong turnout from teachers, parents, pupils and members of the wider community.
Despite the misty skies, spirits were high on the picket line outside the school gates, as striking staff were met with waves of encouragement and support from well-wishers.
Flowers, Food and Messages of Support
In a show of solidarity, people from across Falmouth turned up with gifts for the striking staff. Among them, one supporter arrived with a bouquet of flowers, prompting cheers and heartfelt thanks from those on the picket line.
“Every one of these gifts reminds us how much we mean to this community,” said one striking staff member.
Pupils Join with Homemade Banners
A number of pupils arrived at the picket line holding handmade banners with messages like “Help make our school a better place”, decorated in bright colours. Their presence was met with smiles and emotional responses from the staff on strike, who described the children’s involvement as uplifting.
Families Stand Firm
Photographs from the day show dozens of parents standing shoulder-to-shoulder with teachers. One parent, whose two daughters attend the school, said:
“We’re here because our children deserve the best. Seeing families united like this—it’s incredibly moving.”
Another parent added:
“My child’s teacher is the most patient, kind person, who cares deeply about all the children in her class. If she is out here, then I know something can’t be right in there!”
Talks Remain Stalled
Despite three consecutive days of strike action, the National Education Union (NEU) says there has been no progress in negotiations with Kernow Learning Multi Academy Trust since union members rejected a proposal on Thursday 3rd July.
Martin Dixon, President of NEU Cornwall, said:
“This silence is deeply disappointing for everyone involved. We have today once again engaged with the school and the MAT, and we strongly urge them to provide a formal offer that would be acceptable to our members.”
More Strike Days Ahead
The union confirmed that three more strike days are already scheduled for next week, and said the determination among staff remains strong.
“Our members will not be cowed, and their resolution is unwavering,” Martin said.
The message from the picket line is clear: staff, parents and pupils want to see change, and they are not backing down.
