Tamar Crossings and YMCA Plymouth Host Women in STEM Day for Local Students on 20th June
Local pupils to hear from women in engineering and explore career options
More than 200 young women from schools and colleges across Devon and Cornwall will be heading to the Tamar Bridge on Friday 20th June for a special day aimed at inspiring the next generation of engineers.
The Women in STEM Day, now in its third year, is being hosted at the Bridging the Tamar Visitor and Learning Centre by Tamar Crossings in partnership with YMCA Plymouth. The event is part of the global celebrations for International Women in Engineering Day, which falls on 23rd June each year.
Engineering her future
Pupils from Plymstock, Saltash, Sir John Hunt, All Saints Academy, Marine Academy Plymouth and Ivybridge College will be taking part in the day. They’ll have the chance to hear first-hand stories from women working in engineering and other STEM careers.
Speaking ahead of the event, Coral Jonas, Tamar Bridge Manager, said:
“For the third year running we are delighted to be hosting this year’s Women in STEM event in partnership with YMCA focused on ‘Engineering her Future’ and apprenticeship opportunities. Tamar Crossings has the responsibility for managing both the Tamar Bridge and the Torpoint Ferry, both of which offer a number of STEM related careers.
“During the day students will visit our learning centre, focused on the engineering brilliance of the two bridges, take a walk out onto the iconic Tamar Bridge and engage with many of the wonderful companies and guest speakers joining us on the day.
“We hope that this event will inspire more young women to become our future engineers.”
Real-world opportunities
As well as Tamar Crossings and YMCA Plymouth, several other organisations will be on hand to speak with students including ICE, Focus Training, Babcock and Aecom.
Sarah Newberry, manager at YMCA Plymouth and event organiser, said:
“We’re proud to be jointly hosting this event for the third year, continuing our commitment to helping young people discover exciting pathways into engineering.
“By connecting them with real-world opportunities and role models in the industry, we aim to spark ambition and open doors to fulfilling careers. At YMCA Plymouth, we believe in empowering young people to build brighter futures — and events like this are a vital part of that mission.”
The event will take place at the Bridging the Tamar Visitor and Learning Centre on 20th June.
