St Francis C of E staff begin six days of strikes under sunny skies and community support

Teachers and support staff at St Francis Church of England Primary School kicked off the first of six planned strike days yesterday, Friday 4th July, with a lively show of solidarity at the school gates.

A Striking Start to July

Around 50 people joined the picket line outside the school, creating a carnival-like scene with upbeat music, flags, banners and whistles. Parents, grandparents, former colleagues and local residents turned out in support, while passing cars tooted in encouragement.

Even supply staff chose not to cross the picket line, instead standing shoulder-to-shoulder with colleagues. “We acknowledge their bravery and solidarity,” said one teacher.

What’s Behind the Action?

The striking staff are members of the National Education Union (NEU), taking action to push for better working conditions that they say will directly benefit pupils.

Their demands include:

  • Improved communication between leadership, parents and staff

  • Stronger wellbeing safeguards to support teaching staff

  • Observations designed to help professional development

  • Clear behaviour and safeguarding structures

As conversations sparked on the picket line, parents told children why teachers were striking, many highlighting how supported teachers create calmer, more effective classrooms.

Community Spirit on Show

“We’ve never seen anything like it,” said one parent, who joined in with the whistle-blowing. “It feels like a school fair, but the stakes are real.”

The CEO of the Kernow Learning Trust has described the demands as “very reasonable.” Families are now asking why a deal hasn’t already been reached.

What Happens Next?

The next strike days are scheduled for 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th and 16th July. Picket lines will be held before school, with organisers inviting all supporters to join.

“The sooner the Trust makes a serious offer that meets the demands, the sooner we can get back to the classroom—stronger than ever,” said one teacher.

As the strikes continue, the atmosphere remains upbeat but determined. Staff, families and the wider community are standing together—for better working conditions, and for the future of teaching at St Francis.
