Exploring Berlin’s Landmarks

Students from Pool Academy, part of Athena Learning Trust, have taken their history lessons to new heights with an unforgettable visit to Berlin. The educational trip saw the group embark on a fascinating walking tour of the German capital, exploring key historical sites such as the Brandenburg Gate.

As part of their studies on Weimar and Nazi Germany, students delved into Berlin’s complex past, gaining a deeper understanding of how these periods shaped the city.

A Journey Through History

The trip provided multiple opportunities to engage with Germany’s political and cultural history. A visit to the Berlin Wall allowed students to reflect on the city’s division during the Cold War and its reunification, while a guided tour of the Reichstag, Germany’s Parliament building, gave them insight into the country’s political evolution.

The group also stepped back in time at the Olympic Stadium, originally built for the 1936 Olympic Games, a site rich with historical significance.

A Balance of Learning and Fun

Alongside their historical studies, students had time to enjoy Berlin’s modern attractions. A visit to the Mall of Berlin offered a mix of reflection and excitement, with one of the trip’s highlights being a thrilling ride down the famous Samsung slide.

Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, praised the students for their enthusiasm, saying:

“We are incredibly proud of how engaged our students have been in learning about Berlin’s history. This trip has not only broadened their understanding of key historical events but has also given them a deeper appreciation of how history continues to influence the world we live in today. It’s an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime.”

Bringing Learning to Life

The trip exemplifies Pool Academy’s commitment to offering students valuable opportunities that go beyond the classroom. With aspiration, belonging, and respect at the heart of their ethos, the school aims to provide enriching experiences that inspire students both academically and personally.

According to Ofsted, Pool Academy fosters a supportive environment where:

  • Pupils feel safe at school and value the strong pastoral support they receive.
  • The morning greeting helps pupils start their day positively.
  • Classrooms are quiet and calm, creating an effective learning environment.

For the students who took part, Berlin was more than just a destination—it was a living classroom, bringing history to life in a way textbooks never could.
