Last week, Penrice Academy’s Assembly Hall was alight with the excitement of their 2024 school production, Oliver JR.

Over three evenings, audiences were treated to a vibrant performance filled with classic songs such as “Consider Yourself”, “Food Glorious Food”, and “Oom-Pah-Pah”, encouraging everyone to toe-tap and clap along. Each night, over 200 attendees filled the venue, culminating in enthusiastic applause for the students’ performances.

The production week concluded with a special daytime show for visiting Primary Schools on Friday, showcasing the talents of Penrice students to younger audiences and perhaps inspiring future performers.

Tanya, the Headteacher at Penrice Academy, shared her pride and admiration for everyone involved in bringing Oliver JR to life. She praised the high quality of the acting, singing, props, and technical aspects of the show, highlighting the incredible teamwork, respect, and determination displayed by the students. Tanya extended her gratitude towards the Oliver JR 2024 Staff Production Team, consisting of Mrs Ames, Mr Brodey, Ms Doorey, Mr Easterbrook, Mr Goodlad, and Mr Jenyon, for their inspirational efforts and significant impact on the students and the production.

Preparation for Oliver JR began in the Summer Term of 2023 with auditions, followed by committed rehearsals twice a week. The dedication of the actors and actresses was mirrored by the Set, Costume & Prop Design Team, who worked behind the scenes to create a visually compelling experience.

Tanya emphasised the importance of self-discipline, resilience, and commitment, noting how these traits are essential not only in the performing arts but in all areas of life. She congratulated all participants for their outstanding contributions to the success of the show.

Oliver JR is the latest in a series of successful productions at Penrice Academy, following Matilda JR in 2023 and Mary Poppins JR in 2022, underlining the school’s commitment to the performing arts. Penrice Academy also extended thanks to the community for its continued support of the school’s life and extracurricular activities, reinforcing the vital role these productions play in the school’s ethos and the wider Penrice community.
