Newquay Tretherras Strike Action Confirmed – What It Means for Students
School Closures Announced as Teachers Plan Walkout
Some teachers at Newquay Tretherras will take strike action this week, with the school set to close for certain year groups as a result.
Headteacher Gemma Harries has stated that 69% of National Education Union (NEU) teaching members at the school – equating to 55 teaching staff out of a total of 217 – are planning to strike. This follows concerns over real-term cuts to school budgets, an issue affecting schools across the country.
Which Year Groups Are Affected?
The industrial action is set to take place on Wednesday 26th February and Thursday 27th February. As a result:
- Year 9 and Year 10 students will not attend school but will have work set on ClassCharts.
- Year 7, Year 8, and Year 11 will still attend as usual.
- Year 12 and Year 13 are welcome to use the school’s KS5 facilities to study and attend any scheduled lessons.
All trips, visits, and after-school activities on these days have been cancelled for all students.
Negotiations and Future Strike Action
Harries apologised for the short notice, explaining that while discussions between the NEU and the CELT Trust had made progress, the union confirmed this morning that the strike will still go ahead.
Dan Morrow, CELT Trust Lead, is reportedly working with regional and national union representatives to find solutions to the national funding pressures impacting schools.
Further strikes are planned for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week, but the school hopes to reach further resolutions in the coming days.
