Local Student Nominated for National Charity Award for Supporting Children with Arthritis
Pool Academy Year 8 Student Finalist in National Benefact Charity Hero Awards
Abbie, a Year 8 student from Pool Academy, part of the Athena Learning Trust, has been nominated as a finalist in the first-ever Benefact Charity Hero Awards. Abbie is competing in the Volunteer of the Year category for her remarkable work supporting children diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA).
“A Little Box of Hope” for Children with Arthritis
Over the past five years, Abbie has dedicated her time to Juvenile Arthritis Research. Her most notable contribution is the creation of A Little Box of Hope—a thoughtful support package sent to children across the UK who have been diagnosed with JIA. Each box includes vital information and support materials, as well as a personal, handwritten note from Abbie, offering comfort and encouragement to each child.
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis is the most common form of arthritis in children and teenagers, often causing joint pain and inflammation in areas like the hands, knees, ankles, and elbows. Abbie’s initiative aims to provide emotional support to children dealing with the condition, making her nomination in the Benefact Charity Hero Awards well-deserved.
Awards Ceremony at the Tower of London
The Benefact Charity Hero Awards, which aim to recognise volunteers who have made a positive impact for charities, will take place on 28th November at the Tower of London. Other award categories include Climate Action Project and Charity Leader of the Year.
Nick Ward, Principal at Pool Academy, expressed delight at Abbie’s nomination, saying the school fosters a sense of togetherness, and Abbie’s volunteer work perfectly embodies these values.
Pool Academy’s Core Values and Ofsted Recognition
Pool Academy’s core values of aspiration, belonging, and respect play a central role in supporting students like Abbie in their efforts. Ofsted inspectors have highlighted the school’s positive environment, noting the strong pastoral care and well-planned curriculum.
Applications for secondary school places at Pool Academy are currently open, with a deadline of 31st October. For more details, visit their website.
