Local Mums Lead the Way as First Registered Nurses from University Centre Truro & Penwith
Two local mothers have become the first registered nurses to qualify from the University Centre Truro & Penwith. Toni McIntyre, a mother of three from Redruth, and Rebecca Armstrong, a stepmother from St Austell, have successfully transitioned from Nursing Associates to registered nurses.
The Journey to Success
Toni McIntyre, who balances her demanding career with raising three children, found that being able to further her career locally while living at home was essential. The University Centre Truro & Penwith provided the perfect environment for her to achieve her goals.
For Rebecca Armstrong, the proximity of the new multi-million-pound STEM and Health Skills Centre in Bodmin played a crucial role. The state-of-the-art facility, equipped with the latest health simulation suites, enabled her to train one day a week with cutting-edge technology. This hands-on experience was instrumental in her journey to becoming a registered nurse.
New Careers at Treliske Hospital
Both Toni and Rebecca have now secured high-skilled jobs at Cornwall’s main hospital, Treliske, located just across the road from their training centre. Their achievements highlight the opportunities available through local educational institutions and the importance of accessible, high-quality training facilities.
Future Opportunities
The University Centre Truro & Penwith is already accepting applications for their Nursing and Allied Health courses starting in September 2025. Prospective students are encouraged to reach out for more information and assistance with the application process.

This milestone achievement by Toni and Rebecca not only sets a precedent for future students but also showcases the effectiveness of local education and training in fostering skilled professionals ready to serve the community.
