In a pioneering move, Lanner School has distinguished itself as the first educational institution in Cornwall to focus on the welfare of its staff by launching a dedicated wellbeing programme specifically designed for educators. This programme, developed in collaboration with AC Simply Wellbeing, aims to address the high levels of stress associated with the teaching profession—a career path that has seen a significant turnover, with a third of newly qualified teachers changing professions within the last decade.

The wellbeing programme is a direct response to the growing concern over teacher burnout and the stressful nature of their work. It offers a comprehensive approach to improving both the mental and physical health of teachers, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the learning environment and overall classroom experience. Through a series of workshops focused on nutrition and relaxation, the programme also seeks to bolster immunity among staff members, providing them with effective strategies to manage stress and anxiety.

A notable feature of the programme is the introduction of a specially designed sound bath session, which has been shown to offer numerous benefits, including pain reduction, toxin elimination, and improved sleep quality. This session marks the beginning of the training for Lanner School’s teachers, setting a precedent for holistic health practices in the educational sector.

Kieran Walsh, the headteacher of Lanner School, emphasised the importance of self-care among educators, linking it directly to the wellbeing of their students. “The children in our school are our priority, and their health, both physical and mental, is always at the forefront of our minds. By investing in our own health and wellbeing, we are, in turn, investing in the future of our students,” Walsh stated.

Louise Cole, co-founder of AC Simply Wellbeing, highlighted the high-pressure nature of teaching and the programme’s role in mitigating these challenges. “Our aim is to help teachers thrive, not just in the short term but as a long-term solution to prevent burnout. By bringing together experts from across the South West, we offer a supportive network that addresses both immediate and ongoing needs,” Cole explained.

This innovative programme is now available to schools throughout Cornwall, offering customisation options to meet the unique requirements of each institution. For more information, educators and school administrators are encouraged to visit the AC Simply Wellbeing website.
