How a Local Business Is Revolutionising Child Safety and Education in Nature

Imerys, has collaborated with the local Community Interest Company ‘To The Woods’ to enhance safety and privacy at the Cornish Acorns forest school in Par.

This partnership has not only solved a significant safety concern but has also led to the development of new community facilities that promise to offer valuable learning experiences for local youth.

Safety First: A Response to Natural Challenges

In December last year, Imerys addressed a critical issue at the forest school site caused by Ash dieback, a disease affecting ash trees, which necessitated the felling of two infected trees. This action inadvertently reduced the natural barrier between the school and the nearby road, raising safety concerns for the children attending the school. Jeremy, from Imerys, explained that the removal of the trees and undergrowth prompted them to install a new fence, funded and arranged by Imerys, to ensure that the children could continue to enjoy their activities without risk.

Enhanced Security and Learning Opportunities

Charlotte, who runs the forest school, expressed her gratitude towards Imerys for their swift action in restoring the safety of the site with the new fence, which now provides much-needed privacy and security from the road traffic. This improvement has significantly enhanced the environment for all participants, making it safer and more conducive to learning.

Expanding Community Contributions

Further demonstrating their commitment to local welfare, Imerys has extended their support beyond immediate safety measures. Mark, the UK Director for Imerys, highlighted the company’s contribution towards building an outdoor community kitchen at the site. This facility is expected to offer young attendees an opportunity to acquire and practice new skills, enhancing their learning experience. In addition to this, Imerys has donated ball clay for creative activities, adding another layer to the educational opportunities available at the forest school.

Biodiversity and Environmental Enhancements

The commitment of Imerys extends to environmental conservation as well. The replanting of hawthorn shrubs and future plans for additional planting are set to improve the biodiversity of the area, ensuring that it remains a thriving, natural space for education and growth.

A Model of Corporate Responsibility

This partnership between Imerys and To The Woods exemplifies how businesses can play a crucial role in addressing community needs and enhancing local educational landscapes. The efforts of Imerys in safeguarding and enriching the forest school experience highlight a model of corporate responsibility that potentially sets a precedent for other companies to follow.
