Luxulyan School Among First to Roll Out Landmark Scheme

Families in South East Cornwall are set to benefit as Luxulyan School is named among the first 750 schools in England to introduce free breakfast clubs, part of a major national rollout by the Labour government.

Starting in April, the programme promises to put up to £450 a year back in parents’ pockets while ensuring children start their school day fed and ready to learn.

What Does This Mean for Families?

The new universal breakfast clubs will provide:
✅ A free nutritious breakfast for all primary-aged pupils
30 minutes of free childcare every morning
✅ A chance for children to socialise and engage in educational activities before lessons begin

The scheme is part of a broader push to reduce household costs, alongside Labour’s plans to cap branded uniform items and expand government-funded childcare.

Nathan Cooper, Headteacher at Luxulyan School, welcomed the news, saying:

“We are delighted to be one of the early adopter schools for this very welcome addition to our school offer.

“For Luxulyan School, the funding provided will have a hugely positive impact on all of the pupils in our community ensuring we can provide a healthy breakfast and supportive start to the day for our pupils.”

A Step Towards Tackling Child Poverty

With 1 in 4 children living in absolute poverty as of 2023, Labour’s Child Poverty Taskforce is working to increase household income, lower essential costs, and support struggling families.

Breakfast clubs have been shown to improve attendance, behaviour, and academic performance, with research indicating they can boost children’s reading, writing, and maths by an average of two months.

Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education, highlighted the impact:

“Breakfast clubs can have a transformative impact on the lives of millions of children, feeding hungry tummies and fuelling hungry minds, so every child begins the day ready to learn.”

South East Cornwall MP Backs the Move

Anna Gelderd, MP for South East Cornwall, praised the decision to include Luxulyan School:

“It’s a testament to both the school and the Labour government’s dedication to getting children school-ready so they are able to improve their attendance, attainment and wellbeing, as well as improving the household finances of local families.”

The breakfast club rollout is expected to expand nationwide, with more schools set to join the scheme in future phases.
