From glowing tanks to Plymouth Hoe: A school trip they’ll never forget

Pupils from Egloskerry Primary School, part of the Athena Learning Trust, have returned from a residential trip that brought their learning to life in the most unforgettable way – starting with an overnight stay inside the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.

Sleeping with the fishes

The trip began with what many children described as a magical experience – quite literally sleeping beside sharks, rays, and curious sea creatures inside the UK’s largest public aquarium. The group took part in torchlit tours, experienced the aquarium at night, and woke to early-morning marine life in an immersive setting designed to spark curiosity.

The National Marine Aquarium, located on the Barbican, is home to thousands of marine animals from around the globe and is well known for its unique educational visits.

A journey through Plymouth’s past

The next day, pupils continued their adventure at The Box Museum, one of Plymouth’s leading cultural attractions. They explored engaging exhibitions and discovered more about the rich heritage and history of the city.

To round off their trip, the group enjoyed a walk along Plymouth Hoe, breathing in the sea air and taking in iconic views of the coast and historic landmarks.

A lasting impact

Lynsey Slater, Principal at Egloskerry Primary School, said:

“This was a truly magical experience for our pupils, one that blended education, exploration, and excitement. Sleeping beside the aquarium tanks and visiting key cultural landmarks brought learning to life in the most memorable way. These opportunities are so important for building curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of discovery.”

Egloskerry Primary School has been praised by Ofsted, with a Good rating for the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and early years provision, and an Outstanding rating for personal development and leadership and management.

Inspectors noted that pupils are proud of their school, feel well cared for, and know that teachers and leaders have high expectations of them. Pupils are described as ambitious, confident, and hard-working.
