Cornwall Families Get a Boost with Fresh Summer Activity Ideas

A new activity booklet, Five Ways On Summer Days, has been launched to help families in Cornwall enjoy an exciting and engaging summer holiday. This booklet is packed with a variety of ideas, challenges, recipes, and activities designed to enhance both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Five Ways to Wellbeing

The booklet is inspired by the Five Ways To Wellbeing, a set of principles encouraging people to:

  1. Take notice of the world around them.
  2. Connect with people (or animals).
  3. Get moving, preferably outdoors.
  4. Give and be kind to others.
  5. Find time for oneself.

Fun and Educational Activities

Inside Five Ways On Summer Days, families will find a plethora of unique and enjoyable activities, such as:

  • Sweet Treats: Make iced banana lollies and deliver them to friends, with included recipes.
  • Hedgehog Homes: Build a hedgehog home using the provided instructions.
  • Creative Writing: Engage in writing a story.
  • Bird Watching: Create a bird feeder, complete with step-by-step instructions.
  • Charity: Donate unwanted toys to charity.

The booklet also highlights some of Cornwall’s fantastic attractions and details activities like the Summer Reading Challenge and the National Literary Trust’s ‘Walk and Talk’ events.

Supporting Cornwall’s Families

The booklet was created by Cornwall Council’s Headstart Kernow team, in collaboration with the Health and Wellbeing Partnership. Cllr Barbara Ellenbroek, cabinet member for children and families at Cornwall Council, emphasised the importance of this resource.

“The summer holidays are super exciting for our children, but for parents and carers it can be tricky coming up with things to do in all that free time,” Barbara said. “This is where our new Five Ways On Summer Days booklet proves invaluable as it is bursting at the seams with ideas and activities that are tailor-made to help us feel happy and healthy. One of the council’s key priorities is that ‘Cornwall is a brilliant place to be a child and grow up’ and this booklet will definitely play a role in helping to achieve this.”
