In an engaging display of creativity and engineering prowess, students from 61 schools across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have taken part in this year’s eagerly anticipated First Lego League competition.

The event, spanning over two action-packed days, was hosted at the Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, drawing attention to the vital importance of careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).

Organised by Cornwall Council in collaboration with the Royal Navy, the competition offered a unique platform for young participants to showcase their skills in design and robotics. Teams of students were tasked with designing and constructing Lego robots capable of performing a series of complex tasks. In addition to the robotics challenge, participants were also required to undertake a project and presentation, further testing their ability to innovate and communicate their ideas effectively.

The First Lego League competition is not only about the thrill of the contest but also serves as a foundational experience for students to explore and develop an interest in STEM fields. By engaging in hands-on, practical challenges, students gain valuable insights into the real-world applications of their skills and creativity.

As the competition concluded, the top-performing teams prepared to advance to the national finals, where they will compete against other young innovators from across the country. This progression not only signifies the high calibre of talent found within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly but also highlights the region’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineers, scientists, and technologists.

The success of this year’s event underscores the collaborative efforts of Cornwall Council and the Royal Navy in fostering an environment where young minds can flourish. Through such endeavours, students are encouraged to pursue their passions in STEM, laying the groundwork for future innovations and discoveries that could shape the world.
