Cornwall College Esports Teams Triumph in British Championships
In a remarkable display of skill and teamwork, Esports teams from Cornwall College have secured a significant victory in the recent British Esports Championships, marking a notable achievement for The Cornwall College Group (TCCG). Competing under the banners of the Krakens and the Serpents, the teams from the Camborne and St Austell campuses, respectively, have clinched victories across multiple games, setting a new precedent for the college in competitive gaming.
The championships saw the Serpents, hailing from the St Austell campus and the college’s inaugural Esports team, taking the lead in the Overwatch 2 tournament. They faced off against South Gloucester College in a series of intense matches, ultimately showcasing their superior strategies and teamwork to secure the win. This victory was particularly sweet for the Serpents, who demonstrated their resilience and tactical acumen throughout the competition.
Meanwhile, the Krakens from the Camborne campus have shown their prowess in Rocket League, achieving a commendable 3-1 victory over HSDC Storm. This match, broadcast live by the British Esports Federation, not only highlighted the team’s skill but also their determination to represent Cornwall on a national level. With their sights set on the upcoming nationals, the Krakens are gearing up for even greater challenges ahead.
Callum Wood, captain of the Rocket League team and a student of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Esports at Camborne, shared his excitement over their achievements. Reflecting on the championship, Wood emphasised the electrifying experience of being recognised in a professional arena and the team’s remarkable comeback in the Valorant segment of the competition. This resilience and spirit of competition are what the Krakens aim to carry into their future endeavors.
Sabre Przybylska, also known as Shadow, captain of the Serpents and a student on the Level 3 Game Design diploma at St Austell, recounted the team’s journey to victory. She highlighted the importance of communication and teamwork, attributing their success to the collective effort and strategic planning. Przybylska’s leadership played a pivotal role in guiding the Serpents through the challenges of the tournament, culminating in a series of thrilling wins that boosted the team’s morale and excitement for future competitions.
David Atkinson-Beaumont, head of Cornwall College St Austell, lauded the achievements of both teams, noting the significance of having an Esports team on campus. He emphasised the role of Esports in fostering a sense of community and shared ambition among students, as well as the sport’s increasing recognition and competitive nature.
