A Level Environmental Science students from Callywith College recently visited Newquay Zoo, delving into the world of wildlife conservation.

The visit was packed with activities designed to broaden their understanding of the current efforts to preserve endangered species.

During their time at the zoo, the students engaged in an informative session about three different conservation projects. These discussions shed light on how species are categorised based on their rarity and explored the diverse methods employed to boost their populations. The talks also provided insights into the successes achieved and the obstacles faced in these conservation endeavours.

A highlight of the visit was the series of keeper talks focused on Humboldt penguins. These presentations emphasised the critical importance of choosing sustainably fished products to support the survival of these and other marine species. The students learned about the impact of fishing practices on wildlife and gained a deeper appreciation for the role of consumer choices in conservation.

Additionally, the visit featured a showcase of unique items that have been donated to the zoo, offering the students a tangible connection to the conservation work being undertaken. These items served as a reminder of the generosity of the community and the collective effort required to support wildlife preservation.

This educational visit to Newquay Zoo not only enhanced the students’ understanding of environmental science and conservation but also inspired them to consider their own roles in protecting the planet’s biodiversity.
