Athena Learning Trust Celebrates Strong Phonics Results in Cornish Primary Schools
Athena Learning Trust primary schools smash phonics check results
Several primary schools across the Athena Learning Trust are celebrating top results in this year’s national Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, with two Cornish schools achieving a perfect pass rate.
Egloskerry Primary School and Altarnun Primary School both saw 100% of their Year 1 pupils pass the phonics check, while Launceston Primary School achieved a strong 95% pass rate.
The phonics screening check is a statutory test designed to assess children’s ability to decode words using phonics. Pupils are tested on 40 words, including both real and made-up words, to evaluate their early reading skills.
Commitment to early literacy
The trust, which runs schools across the South West including Cornwall and Devon, says the results highlight the impact of evidence-based teaching methods and a focus on early reading strategies.
Ben Parnell, CEO of Athena Learning Trust, said:
“We are incredibly proud of the outstanding phonics outcomes across our primary schools. These results reflect the unwavering dedication of our staff, the hard work of our pupils, and the strong belief that every child can succeed when given the right support. Early literacy is the gateway to all learning, and we remain firmly committed to ensuring every child has the best possible start to their education.”
Athena Learning Trust has pledged to continue investing in phonics as a core part of its approach to improving outcomes, especially for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.
More than just results
Athena’s mission is to provide every child with access to a great education and the opportunities that come with it. The trust’s values — “Dream Big, Take Responsibility, and Be Kind” — aim to inspire pupils to reach their full potential while fostering a respectful and supportive community.
The trust also includes Pool Academy, Launceston College, Bideford College, The Ilfracombe Academy, Atlantic Academy and Camborne Science and International Academy.
