Over 1,200 Members Enjoy a Day Packed with Activities at Stithians Showground

Girlguiding members from across Cornwall came together for a day of celebration and adventure at Stithians Showground on Saturday, 22nd June. The event saw over 1,200 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, and volunteers engaging in a plethora of activities designed to embody the spirit of Girlguiding, culture, and fun.

A Day to Remember

The day was filled with hundreds of activities that catered to all interests. Participants had the opportunity to enjoy singing, yoga, archery, den building, archaeology, escape rooms, tug of war, climbing walls, Cornish language lessons, and even a visit from Devon and Cornwall Police. The event concluded with a surprise silent disco, where members of all ages danced the evening away, creating memories to last a lifetime.

Catherine from 10th Falmouth Guides commented, “It was very inclusive as there was something for everyone to do. It was really fun!” Chloe from 1st Falmouth Rangers added, “I’d never been to a big county event before and I didn’t realise how many of us there were in Girlguiding in Cornwall!”

Extending the Fun to the Isles of Scilly

The celebration wasn’t limited to the mainland. Girlguiding members from the Isles of Scilly, including girls from St Mary’s, St Martin’s, and Bryher, enjoyed an incredible day out. Their activities included an exciting wildlife boat trip to see puffins, followed by various activities and lunch on St Agnes.

Bringing the Community Together

Sarah Powlesland, the Kevewi Event Coordinator, expressed her joy at the success of the event. “Wow, what an event! To see and hear the buzz was amazing. So many girls and leaders enjoying themselves, taking part in activities, trying something new, celebrating guiding, making new friends and catching up with old friends,” she said. “Since covid, the social-circle of life has changed. We now have a new normal and bringing everyone together on Saturday has reminded girls and leaders that the ethos of guiding has not changed and that we are as relevant today as we were before covid. Guiding is a space for girls to have a voice, building on their skills and confidence, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and empowering them to make a positive difference in their community.”

Sue Harris, Cornwall County Commissioner, also praised the dedication of the volunteers. “I am extremely grateful to our dedicated volunteers who, as well as running their units week in and week out, managed to find extra time and incredible enthusiasm to create Kevewi, our County-wide fun day on Saturday. We showcased the best of Girlguiding in Cornwall with over 1200 members all having an amazing time. The buzz was tangible and to see all the smiling faces reinforces why Girlguiding is an important part of a girl’s journey and relevant in the 2020s.”
