Truro Residents Brew Support: Raise a Cup for Christian Aid Week 2024
This May, the residents of Truro are hosting events to support Christian Aid Week 2024, highlighting their commitment to combating global poverty and the impacts of climate change.
Spearheaded by Sue and Barry, alongside Jenny from the Truro Christian Aid Group, these community-oriented gatherings aim to gather funds crucial for vulnerable communities worldwide.
Coffee Morning and Crafts for a Cause
Set in the picturesque Summerville on Crescent Road, the annual coffee morning on Saturday, May 18, promises Truro locals a chance to indulge in delicious home produce and unique crafts between 10 am and noon. This event isn’t just about enjoying good coffee and company; it’s an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the pressing issues faced by people in some of the world’s most challenged regions.
A Tasty Prelude: Bread-and-Cheese Lunch
In a delicious build-up to the main event, a bread-and-cheese lunch will take place at Kenwyn Church, 2 Knights Hill, Truro, TR1 3UY on Wednesday, May 15. From noon to 2 pm, attendees can savour simple yet hearty fare while contributing to a noble cause.
Why Christian Aid Week Matters
This year’s appeal runs between May 12–18, the funds raised during these local events are vital for Christian Aid’s long-term projects, especially in places like Burundi—one of Africa’s poorest and most densely populated countries. The organisation has been a beacon of hope since 1995, initially providing aid to those affected by civil conflict and now supporting sustainable development through Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs).

Empowering Communities
These VSLAs enable residents to save money and fund small businesses, thereby securing a more stable and diversified income. This initiative is crucial in a country where over 70% of the population lives in poverty and more than half of the children suffer from chronic malnutrition.
