In a remarkable demonstration of commitment and endurance, Critical Care Paramedic Paul Maskell is set to participate in the London Marathon, donning his full Cornwall Air Ambulance kit.

This challenging endeavour aims to generate essential funds for the charity’s #HELi2 Appeal, which seeks to enhance emergency medical services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

A Unique Challenge

Paul, who also represents Team GB in the 24hr Ultramarathon World Championships, is preparing for what is undeniably a daunting task. The London Marathon, scheduled for Sunday 21st April 2024, will see him navigate the 26.2-mile course in gear that is far from ideal for such a test. The uniform, described by Paul as heavy, non-breathable, and fire retardant, is designed for protection rather than performance, adding a significant layer of complexity to his marathon efforts.

Despite these obstacles, Paul’s target is ambitious. He aims to complete the marathon in under three hours, a feat impressive under any circumstances but extraordinary given his chosen attire. His determination highlights not only his personal commitment but also the critical cause he supports.

Supporting a Lifesaving Service

The #HELi2 Appeal’s goal is to raise £2.85 million to fund a second AW169 helicopter. This addition would substantially increase the service’s capacity to attend emergencies, ultimately saving more lives by providing rapid, airborne medical assistance across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Paul’s marathon challenge is a pivotal effort to support this vital fundraising initiative.

Paul’s plea to the public is heartfelt. “I’d be so grateful if you could help me raise as much money as possible for an amazing, local cause!” he stated. Contributions to Paul’s marathon run can be made through his Just Giving page, directly supporting the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust’s mission to enhance its lifesaving capabilities.

How to Support

For those inspired by Paul’s dedication and looking to contribute to the #HELi2 Appeal, donations can be made via his fundraising page on Just Giving. Every contribution brings Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust closer to its goal of securing a second AW169 helicopter, bolstering the resilience of this crucial emergency service.

As Paul sets his sights on the London Marathon, his challenge underscores the importance of community support in enabling essential services like the Cornwall Air Ambulance to expand their reach and impact. Through collective efforts and generous donations, the hope is not only to meet the fundraising target but also to continue saving lives with even greater efficiency and effectiveness.
