Man’s Extraordinary 18-Year Fundraising Feat for Charities in Cornwall

Published On: 17 May 2024Last Updated: 17 May 2024By

David Rickard, a resident of Honiton, Devon, has dedicated the past 18 years to fundraising for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and other organisations in Cornwall, in memory of his late mother, Mary Rickard.

Since 2006, David has raised an impressive £28,000 through his steadfast commitment to charitable giving.

A Journey Inspired by Love and Dedication

David’s fundraising journey began as a tribute to his mother, who lived in St. Austell, Cornwall. To honour her memory, David started delivering the free local newspaper, the Midweek Herald, every Wednesday. The proceeds from this dedicated paper route were directed towards various Cornish charities, including the Cornwall Air Ambulance and the RNLI, organisations he deeply admired.

Continuing the Mission Despite Challenges

In 2022, a fall forced David to discontinue his paper deliveries. Despite this setback, his dedication to charitable giving remained unwavering. He continued to support these vital organisations using his personal savings.

“Lifeboat crews are incredibly brave,” David said. “The risks they take to save lives during rescue operations are truly inspiring.”

Significant Contributions to Penlee Lifeboat Station

The RNLI, particularly the Penlee Lifeboat Station, has been a significant beneficiary of David’s remarkable fundraising efforts. His donations have played a crucial role in supporting the RNLI’s mission to save lives at sea.

David’s dedication goes beyond financial contributions. His selflessness and commitment are a testament to his character, earning him heartfelt gratitude from the RNLI and the many other Cornish charities he has supported.

A Legacy of Generosity

David’s story is a powerful reminder of how one individual’s dedication can make a significant difference. His unwavering commitment to honouring his mother’s memory through charitable giving has left an indelible mark on the organisations he supports. The RNLI and the Cornwall Air Ambulance, along with the wider community, express their deepest gratitude for his incredible generosity.
