In a time-honoured and ceremonious gathering, Tony James, a dedicated member of the Oddfellows’ Loyal Cornubian Lodge, was awarded his Past Officer’s Degrees. The ceremony took place recently at the Oddfellows Hall in Redruth and was marked by tradition, regalia, and community spirit.
A Traditional Ceremony
The special ceremony was chaired by the Provisional Grand Master, Sister Tina English, who led the proceedings with dignity and respect. Members from across the district attended, all donned in their ceremonial regalia, and participated in the event’s rituals, including the singing of opening and closing odes. Music was provided by the lodge’s organist, adding a further layer of tradition to the proceedings.
Following the formalities, the attendees enjoyed a range of refreshments, fostering a sense of camaraderie and celebration.
Recognition and Gratitude
Upon receiving the awards, Tony expressed his gratitude and pride. “It has been a great privilege to undertake these lectures and to receive the awards, and I am grateful to all who have worked to enable this occasion to occur,” he said. Tony also highlighted the dual nature of the Oddfellows, acknowledging both its rich traditions and its welcoming social groups. “There is a great social side to the Oddfellows, and there is no compulsion to take part in the traditional side of things,” he noted, emphasising the society’s inclusive and flexible nature.
