Helston Dental Nurse Takes on Dog Walk Challenge After Shock MS Diagnosis
A Helston woman who was unable to feel her legs at the end of last year is challenging herself to walk daily throughout March to raise funds for multiple sclerosis (MS) support.
From Sudden Symptoms to Life-Changing Diagnosis
Sara Thacker, 41, a dental nurse, had been experiencing unusual symptoms for years before waking up one Saturday in November with “intense” pins and needles in both feet.
“It gradually spread up my legs to my belly button,” Sara explained. “My legs were completely numb.”
After an initial A&E visit and an MRI scan, Sara was diagnosed with sciatica—an assessment she knew wasn’t right. Her condition worsened to the point of incontinence and severe mobility issues.
Thankfully, a second opinion from a GP led to a neurologist reviewing her scan and confirming an MS flare. The news came as a shock to Sara, who had always been an active person.
“I used to enjoy running, Pilates and yoga. I still enjoy Pilates and yoga, but I feel more confident walking than running at the moment,” she said.
MS is an incurable autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain and spinal cord, leading to a range of symptoms, including fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and mobility issues.
Taking on the Big Purple Dog Walk
Determined to make a difference, Sara has signed up for The Big Purple Dog Walk, a fundraising event run by MS-UK throughout March. The event encourages participants to set their own walking challenge while raising money for MS support.
“I wanted to do some fundraising for multiple sclerosis, and I came across MS-UK and their dog walk event. I knew it would be perfect for me and my family,” Sara said.
Walking has become an important part of her recovery and mental well-being, and she plans to use the challenge to explore more of Cornwall with her cockapoo, Wilf.
“Wilf is still in the puppy stage, so can be challenging at times. But he loves to play and really loves a fuss made of him. If he’s out on a walk and spots a person, he is desperate for a cuddle and a stroke!”
Overcoming Daily Challenges
Although Sara’s health has been improving, she still faces daily struggles that will make her fundraising effort even more challenging.
“My symptoms of numbness have slowly been improving, but my left leg and foot still feels numb.
“At certain times I struggle with very bad fatigue, the sensations in my face, and heat intolerance, but other days I can be OK. I used to always push myself, but now I listen to my body and allow myself time to rest.”
MS-UK’s Big Purple Dog Walk begins in March, and there is still time to get involved. To sign up, visit ms-uk.org/big-purple-dog-walk.
Sara is also fundraising through her Facebook donation page.
