Help Fund Lifeline for Young Survivors of Sexual Abuse in Cornwall
The Women’s Centre Cornwall is urgently appealing for support to continue its vital work with young women aged 11-18 who are survivors of sexual abuse. Their Young Empowered Women’s Project, a crucial programme for helping these young survivors heal and rebuild their lives, is in need of immediate funding. From October 10th to 17th, every donation to the project will be doubled as part of The Big Give campaign, providing a unique opportunity for supporters to maximise their impact.
A Growing Crisis for Young Women
Statistics show that 12% of women have experienced child sexual abuse before the age of 16, and Ofsted reports that 90% of girls face sexual harassment in schools. For many young women in Cornwall, this trauma is worsened by poverty, deprivation, and rural isolation, leading to devastating consequences such as low self-esteem, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts.
The Young Empowered Women’s Project steps in to provide a safe, compassionate environment led by professionals who specialise in supporting survivors of sexual abuse. Through group sessions, participants are guided in processing their trauma, gaining self-empowerment, and beginning their healing journey.
Stories of Healing and Empowerment
One young woman shared her experience, saying, “I can’t put into words the sense of community I feel in the group. Every person here is going through their own types of pain and healing. It makes me feel accepting of myself.” Another participant, who now serves as a peer supporter, reflected, “I’ve learnt how to make my own justice. Having a happy, successful life is me having justice in my own way.”
