Prickles and Paws’ New Rescue Centre Takes Shape

Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue is preparing for a major milestone as construction of its new ‘Hogspital’ begins in April. This long-awaited project will provide a purpose-built facility on the Carnanton estate, replacing the current setup of converted sheds and hutches in the back garden of co-founder Diane.

After securing planning permission, signing a 25-year lease, and installing key infrastructure, the rescue now has funding in place to make Building A watertight by the end of 2025. The move to the new facility is scheduled for early 2026, providing a much-needed upgrade for hedgehog care, treatment, and rehabilitation.

What’s in the New ‘Hogspital’?

The new building has been designed in collaboration with A-Tec Design to create an eco-friendly rescue centre. Some key features include:
A triage room for assessing and treating new arrivals
An intensive care unit for the most vulnerable hedgehogs
Outdoor undercover maternity and pre-release hutches
An isolation area for infection control
A dedicated reception area – no more completing paperwork in the rain!
A classroom for training, workshops, and educational events
Staff and volunteer facilities, including a meeting room and kitchen

Sustainability and Site Upgrades

The site will include native hedgerows, a wildflower meadow, bat boxes, and log piles to support local wildlife. Plans also include solar panels to cut energy costs and reduce the rescue’s carbon footprint.

Additionally, the new site will feature:

  • Fencing for security and to keep deer out
  • Drainage and a septic tank system
  • Car parking for staff, volunteers, and visitors

What’s Next?

Warvena Construction is set to begin work in April 2025, starting with fencing, pile caps, and the building base. Once Building A is complete, all operations will move under one roof, providing a modern and professional environment for hedgehog care and rescue efforts.

The charity is still fundraising for the fit-out and landscaping, with a second phase planned for Building B, which will double capacity for hedgehog admissions and expand educational opportunities.

Support the Hogspital Build

With construction now starting, Prickles and Paws still needs support to complete the project. To donate or find out more, visit: Prickles and Paws Hogspital.
