Epic Run from Cornwall to London: One Man’s Mission for Retina UK
Alex Backhouse Takes on 17 Marathons in 12 Days from Land’s End to London
Starting on 25th September 2024, Alex Backhouse will be embarking on an extraordinary journey to raise awareness and funds for Retina UK, a charity dedicated to supporting those affected by inherited sight loss. Covering a staggering 700KM over 12 days, Alex’s route spans from Land’s End in Cornwall to London’s St James’s Park, concluding on 6th October 2024.
This immense challenge involves running the equivalent of 17 marathons in just under two weeks. But for Alex, this is more than just a physical feat; it’s a deeply personal mission. His family has been affected by retinitis pigmentosa, a rare inherited sight loss condition that has impacted three generations.
“Family is the Inspiration”
“Family is the inspiration for this route,” Alex said. “Starting in Cornwall, where my grandparents lived and where I spent many summer holidays, and finishing in London, my current home. The quiet endurance and resilience my family has shown in dealing with this invisible disability has profoundly impacted me. It’s a powerful reminder that not all disabilities can be seen.”
Despite the magnitude of the challenge ahead, Alex remains resolute. “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. The anticipation and the unknown are daunting, and there is a very real possibility of failure. But for me, this is a small sacrifice compared to their uncomplaining and unwavering resilience,” he added.
Supporting Retina UK
Alex’s efforts aim to support Retina UK, which is committed to funding medical research and providing essential support to those affected by sight loss conditions like retinitis pigmentosa. James Clarke, Senior Fundraising Manager at Retina UK, expressed the charity’s gratitude: “Alex’s incredible efforts are truly inspiring, and everyone at Retina UK is hugely grateful for his support this Autumn. The money raised from his 700KM challenge will help fund vital medical research projects aimed at finding future treatments for inherited sight loss conditions.”
