Cycling the UK Coast: One Woman’s Journey to Honour Her Late Father
Katy Roberts is undertaking an extraordinary challenge to raise awareness of mental health issues, cycling 3,500 miles around the UK coast in memory of her late father, who tragically died by suicide. Starting from Land’s End, Cornwall, on 1st June, Katy has been pedalling her way across the country, with the goal of raising funds for mental health charities and fostering conversations about mental well-being.
Katy’s journey, which she has named “Saddle to Sea”, is not just a solo effort. Friends, family, and even strangers have joined her along the way, either by cycling alongside her or by taking a dip in the sea to show their support. Her ride is a poignant tribute to her father and a beacon of hope for those struggling with their own mental health issues or coping with the loss of a loved one to suicide.
A Journey with a Purpose
Katy’s cycle is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a mission to create a safe space for people to talk about mental health. Reflecting on her personal experience, Katy says, “I lost my dad to suicide when I was 17. I find it very difficult to talk about it but I am ready to talk about it and I’m ready to help. And hopefully I can help others along the way.”
Katy has invited people from all walks of life to join her at any point in her journey, whether by cycling, walking, or simply being present. Her aim is to connect with others who have faced similar challenges, promoting the idea that being active, outdoors, and part of a community can be powerful tools for mental well-being.
Supporting Mental Health Charities
Katy’s ride is raising money for three mental health charities: Cornwall Mind, Papyrus, and Sport in Mind. These organisations offer crucial support to individuals experiencing mental health issues and those bereaved by suicide.
Paul Reeve, CEO of Cornwall Mind, expressed deep gratitude for Katy’s efforts, stating, “Sometimes a fundraising effort comes along that makes you truly realise how amazing people can be. Katy has used experiences from her past to motivate her to do this impressive cycle round the UK. We are incredibly grateful to her for choosing Cornwall Mind to fundraise for and we know it will make an impact on improving mental health and reducing suicide in Cornwall.”
The Final Stretch
Katy’s journey is set to conclude on 25th August, when she will return to Land’s End, completing the circle she began nearly three months ago. Before reaching her final destination, she will be passing through Fowey on 24th August and then on to Falmouth before the final leg to Land’s End.
Supporters can follow her progress, see photos from the journey, and find more information through her website, “Saddle to Sea”, or on her Instagram page. For those wishing to support Katy’s cause, donations can be made via her JustGiving page.
Katy’s inspiring journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of talking about mental health. Her efforts are not only raising funds but also bringing people together in the fight against the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide.
