Luxulyan’s Jade Hugo Prepares for the 2025 London Marathon in Memory of Her Dad

Jade Hugo, a 36-year-old mum from Luxulyan, is stepping up to an extraordinary challenge in memory of her father by running the 2025 London Marathon for Cornwall Hospice Care. Jade is one of 27 runners representing the Cornish healthcare charity, aiming to beat the impressive £87,954 raised by last year’s participants.

A Personal Mission

Jade, who works for Cornwall Hospice Care, has a deeply personal reason for taking on this challenge. “Dad was at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in 2018, and more recently my step-father spent time there,” she shares. “I always knew I wanted to fundraise, but then I had children and there was the pandemic. Now, it seems like the right time.”

Her late father’s battle with cancer and the compassionate care he received at the hospice have inspired Jade to take on her first marathon. She adds, “Dad loved London and he would be very proud. He fought bravely, and I’ll be thinking of him and my children every step of the way. That will get me through.”

From 5K to Marathon

Jade, who has never run more than 5K or competed in a race, describes the experience as both exciting and nerve-wracking. “I’ve only ever done 5K and not a competitive race or anything like a marathon. It’s a massive challenge, but I know I can do it,” she says.

As part of her training, Jade plans to run Cornwall Hospice Care’s Run Falmouth Half Marathon. “Initially, I was thinking I’d do our half marathon, and I will be doing it as part of my training. But the opportunity for the London Marathon came up, and I went for it. I’m absolutely loving my running, so why not?”

Fundraising Goals

All runners supporting Cornwall Hospice Care are tasked with raising a minimum of £2,000. Jade acknowledges the challenge, saying, “It’s all a bit nerve-wracking, the run and the fundraising. I wouldn’t say I’m scared by it, but it’s a lot of money we’re looking to raise. There are lots of people supporting me, though, and that helps.”

Supporting Cornwall Hospice Care

Jane Appleton, Events and Community Manager at Cornwall Hospice Care, commends Jade and her fellow runners for their dedication. “It’s a big deal to take on one of the world’s most iconic marathons, and I applaud each and every one of those who’ve signed up to support our Cornish charity. We’ll be encouraging them through their training and on every mile of the 26-mile route.”
