Cornish Challenger Steven Webb Hits Milestone in His Epic 500-Mile Journey

Published On: 8 September 2024Last Updated: 8 September 2024By

Six days into his ambitious Cornwall 500 Challenge, Steven Webb is making strides, literally and figuratively, as he navigates the picturesque but rugged terrain of Cornwall. This 500-mile trek is more than a test of endurance; it’s a heartfelt endeavour to support the crucial services of the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

A Challenging Start

Kicking off from the Alverton Hotel in Truro, Steven Webb has, as of Friday, conquered 138 miles of his journey. His route has taken him through some of the most scenic and challenging landscapes of South West Cornwall, reaching St Mellion. Weather conditions have been a mix of wind, rain, and sun—the latter leaving Steven with a notably sunburnt nose.

Despite the physical challenges, including a malfunctioning motor on his electric wheelchair, Steven’s spirits remain high. Thanks to prompt assistance from Cornwall Mobility, who fitted a new motor, and Cornwall Magnetics, who addressed issues with the support van, the journey has continued relatively smoothly.

Memorable Stops and Significant Support

Steven’s route has been punctuated with visits to iconic locations such as Trelissick Gardens, St Mawes, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, and the Eden Project. Other noteworthy stops included Fowey, Looe, and Polperro, with each location offering unique challenges and warm receptions.

The community support has been overwhelming. Not only has Steven managed to raise £2,399, plus £513 in Gift Aid and additional cash donations along the way, but the engagement from the public has also been exceptional. Local hero Clive Kessell even fetched additional collection tins due to the successful fundraising.

Engaging with the Community

Steven Webb has used this opportunity to present the TC500 and the QR Code Crumbs, a project aiming to weave a tapestry of connections across Cornwall. His efforts have not gone unnoticed; he has been actively engaging with the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and local media to spread word about his challenge and the crucial role of the air ambulance service.

Stories of Survival

To amplify the impact of Steven’s journey and the importance of the Cornwall Air Ambulance, the CAA has been sharing stories of individuals aided by their services, like Yvonne from Portscatho and Alan between Veryan and Tregony. These stories highlight the lifesaving work made possible by fundraising efforts like Steven’s.

Rest, Resumption, and a Bear in Need of a Name

After a well-deserved rest day on Saturday, Steven’s journey will resume on Sunday, with plans to traverse the Tamar Valley and then head to the North Coast. Fans and supporters can follow his progress daily through updates on the Cornwall 500 social media channels and a live tracking link.

In a fun twist, Steven is also inviting suggestions for naming the teddy bear accompanying him on his journey. The bear might soon have its own social media presence, adding a playful element to this serious undertaking.

A Roller Coaster of Emotions

“It has been a bit of a roller coaster first few days,” Steven admitted, reflecting on his journey thus far. “There have definitely been lots of highs—meeting some fantastic people and visiting some amazing places I have been before—but also a few lows—the problem with the motor, the rain, and my sunburnt nose.”

Yet, through it all, Steven remains driven by the stories he hears and the evident impact of his efforts: “The best thing has been the incredible welcome I have received from individuals and communities along the way, and the generous way people are putting money in the tins—a huge thank you to everyone who is supporting me.”

As Steven Webb continues his Cornwall 500 Challenge, his journey encapsulates the spirit of community and the collective effort to save lives, proving that every step taken is a step towards saving another life.
