Victim left with fractured skull as violent pair jailed for 20 years combined

A man suffered a fractured skull, broken leg and multiple cuts after being violently attacked in a Camborne garden with a sledgehammer, a screwdriver and a bladed weapon.

The attack took place on 10th September 2024, when Stefan Ledden, 32, and George White, 26, entered a private address at around 3.30pm. The victim had been visiting a friend when the two offenders, both of no fixed abode, arrived.

Ledden and White were sentenced at Plymouth Crown Court on 18th June to ten years in prison each, with an additional three years on extended licence. A jury had previously found them guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following a trial at Truro Crown Court in January.

Brutal attack in broad daylight

The court heard that shortly after arriving, the pair confronted the victim. His friend told him to run, but he was blocked from escaping and ordered to get on the ground.

What followed was described as a horrific attack in the garden during daylight hours. The victim was hit repeatedly in the head and body with a bladed weapon and a sledgehammer. A screwdriver was also used to stab his leg. He sustained numerous defensive wounds while trying to protect himself.

Detective Constable Jamie Ellingham, who led the investigation, said:

“This was an unprovoked and horrific attack during daylight hours in a private garden. It’s clear that these men had no regard for their actions or the impact that this would have on the victim. I welcome this verdict and thank those who assisted with the investigation.”

Fled the scene on bikes

After the assault, Ledden and White fled the scene on bicycles. Emergency services were called, and paramedics treated the victim before alerting police to the suspected assault.

Later that evening, Ledden was spotted in a vehicle. He tried to escape on foot but was quickly caught by officers. White was arrested two days later after extensive CCTV enquiries.

Both men were remanded in police custody until sentencing.

Inspector Lou Brown, who heads the neighbourhood police team in Camborne, said:

“I hope this demonstrates the serious approach we take to identify, arrest and charge offenders who cause significant harm in our communities.”
