A street marshal programme has launched in Camborne, aiming to enhance community safety and reduce antisocial behaviour (ASB) and serious violence in the town. The rollout, part of a wider hotspot policing strategy, is funded by both the Home Office and local resources, bringing Camborne in line with other towns across Cornwall benefiting from the scheme.

Street Marshals Take to Camborne’s Streets

Infinitus, a Cornish security company, has been tasked with providing street marshals for Camborne, expanding on their previous role as Covid marshals in 2020. Now part of the Safer Streets 5 programme, their patrols are focusing on key areas within the town centre that have been identified as ASB hotspots.

While awaiting the appointment of a new ASB Enforcement Officer for Camborne and Redruth, the marshals are stepping up to ensure that the community feels safe. Local businesses and residents have expressed their appreciation, noting that the increased visibility of uniformed patrols has had a positive effect on the overall atmosphere.

Multi-Agency Collaboration

The new patrols are part of a multi-agency approach to crime reduction and safety in Camborne. Partnering with Camborne Town Council, Cornwall Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, and Safer Cornwall, the street marshal patrols form a key part of the local crime prevention strategy.

At the launch, representatives from each organisation attended an operational briefing to learn more about how the methodology behind hotspot policing has already been successful in other parts of Cornwall. The patrols are guided by police crime data, allowing them to target the areas where they are most needed, ensuring a more efficient approach to community safety.

Success Across Cornwall

Camborne is the latest town in Cornwall to benefit from hotspot policing. Other towns, including Newquay, Penzance, St Austell, and Truro, have already seen positive results. In August alone, police and street marshals engaged with more than 4,600 members of the public, made 11 arrests, and responded to 38 incidents of ASB. The collaborative efforts also resulted in 13 safeguarding referrals and the seizure of drugs, alcohol, and stolen goods.

The programme is also helping to improve information sharing between street marshals and the police, which will result in more coordinated responses to local issues. Additional resources, such as a new Tri-Service Safety Officer, funded through the initiative, will further enhance the level of support available to the community.

Funding and Future Plans

Funding for Camborne’s street marshal patrols is part of a wider £1 million project secured by Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez through the Home Office. The Commissioner also secured an additional £200,000 in match funding to expand patrols across Devon and Cornwall.

Alison Hernandez said: “I have seen first-hand the dedicated partnership work happening in Camborne, where local teams are working hard to address important issues. I am pleased that this initiative will bring additional resources to the area.”

Camborne is one of 13 towns and cities benefiting from this scheme, which aims to make local communities feel safer while reducing crime in key areas.

This approach is set to make a lasting impact on the town, as more patrols and resources continue to bolster the efforts of local authorities in tackling crime and ensuring a safer Camborne for all.
