Camborne’s Commercial Square Set for Safety Improvements as Overgrown Vegetation is Cleared

Published On: 20 October 2024Last Updated: 20 October 2024By

Work is underway to remove overgrown vegetation from Camborne’s Commercial Square, a move aimed at enhancing public safety. This project follows a review by Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall Council’s Community Safety Officers, who recommended clearing large shrubs to improve CCTV sight lines and make the area safer for both residents and visitors.

Improving Public Safety in Commercial Square

Cormac, working on behalf of Cornwall Council, is carrying out the vegetation removal as part of the Camborne Renew project, which is funded by the Camborne Town Deal. The goal of Camborne Renew is to enhance the town centre’s appearance, making it more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists while encouraging people to spend more time in the area.

Val Dalley, Chair of Camborne Town Deal board, expressed her support for the project, saying, “Commercial Square is the heart of Camborne’s town centre and, as such, needs to be a pleasant, safe and welcoming place to wander. I’m pleased Town Deal funding is enabling these enhancements and look forward to seeing the square blossoming next spring.”

Greenery Gets a New Life

The scheme has also been welcomed by Cornwall Council’s Louis Gardner, who emphasised the positive impact on the community: “It’s good to see more works funded by Camborne Town Deal taking place to support Camborne town centre and, even better, to know that greenery not needed in Commercial Square will have a new life at the recreation ground.”

As part of the works, shrubs and two large palms will be removed from the square’s planters. Later, the pruning of lime trees will take place after the leaves have fallen, followed by a process called Pleached hedging, which will help shape the trees back to their desired size. The planters are set to be replanted in Spring 2025.

The Camborne Town Deal

The Camborne Town Deal board, in partnership with Cornwall Council, secured £23.7 million to support various regeneration projects across Camborne. These initiatives aim to transform the town centre into a visually appealing and accessible place to live, work, and visit. Cornwall Council is the lead authority for Cornwall’s Town Deals, overseeing the governance and administration of the fund.
