Camborne to Mark VE Day 80 with Street Party, Church Service and Beacon Lighting

Camborne is preparing to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a full day of commemorative events on Thursday 8th May 2025. Organised by the Camborne Branch of the Royal British Legion and Camborne Town Council, the day will bring the community together to reflect and remember.

Morning Ceremony to Begin the Day

The commemorations will begin at 9am with the ceremonial raising of the VE Day 80 flag above the Passmore Edwards Building. Camborne’s Mayor, Cllr James Ball, will make a formal proclamation to mark the occasion.

Following this, at 10.45am, a special service will take place at the war memorial outside St Martin & St Meriadoc parish church. The service will conclude at 11.10am.

Afternoon Street Party for Invited Guests

At 12 noon, celebrations will continue with a VE Day 80 Street Party in the Camborne Library courtyard. This event, which is scheduled to end at 3pm, will be for invited library users only.

Moving Evening Ceremony at Camborne Recreation Ground

The day will conclude with a poignant Beacon Lighting ceremony at Camborne Recreation Ground, where the community is invited to join together to mark the anniversary.

The evening schedule includes:

  • 8.55pm: Welcome from Camborne’s Mayor, Cllr James Ball
  • 9pm: Introduction to VE Day by Lt Col (Ret’d) SO Nicholls, President of Camborne Royal British Legion
  • 9.05pm: National Proclamation
  • 9.07pm: Performance by the Holman Climax Male Voice Choir (three songs over 15 minutes)
  • 9.22pm: Exhortation by Lt Col (Ret’d) SO Nicholls
  • 9.23pm: Last Post performed by a bugler, followed by a two-minute silence
  • 9.27pm: Kohima Epitaph
  • 9.30pm: Beacon lighting accompanied by “Vow to Thee My Country” and the National Anthem

The beacon will be lit in sync with over a thousand others across the nation.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend the evening’s ceremony and take part in this national moment of remembrance and reflection.
